Qatar- Halul Island Power Supply Project (Submarine Cables from Ras Laffan to Halul Island)

Qatar Petroleum (QP) awarded LS Cable & System an EPIC contract for the installation of submarine cables from Ras Laffan end transition joint to Halul end transition joint to upgrade the power supply to Halul Island to meet the future power requirements. The power supply will be through two 132 kV submarine cables, each with an approximate length of 101km and with a capacity of 100 MW each in order to meet the present and future electrical power demand for Halul Island.

Field Description
The installation site is located between Ras Laffan, located in the north of Qatar, and Halul Island, in the Arabian Gulf. Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLIC) is located 80km north east of Doha and covers 106 km2. The city hosts an industrial port and several industrial facilities. Ras Laffan is developed and operated specifically for natural gas based industries that produce gas products and their derivatives from natural gas produced in the North Field. Halul Island is located around 100km north east of the city of Doha. It is approximately 1.5 km2, extending a maximum of 1.7km in a North/South direction and 1.3 km in an East/West direction.

Scope of work
Mermaid Subsea Services was responsible for route clearance, pre-lay grapnel run and Contingency Touch Down Monitoring for Cable lay Operations using a PLGR/RC Vessel. MSS also performed the task of Concrete Mattress Installation at crossing and Cable midline Jointing points using the vessel Siem Daya 2.
